Campaigns

One of the primary areas of focus for the S.E.E.Dragons group is that of environmental campaigning. We are working towards a goal of sustainable, eco-friendly living and the following projects reflect our interests and aims:

Save Priory Park * Tibet * Nuclear Power * Transition Town Westcliff

After a disappointing result in the local elections, the Conservatives maintain a majority on the Council. They are the only party that are still committed to the F5 road scheme and your support for the preservation of Priory Park is needed as much as ever!

Save Priory Park

Southend Council have proposed a road-widening and development plan known as the F5 scheme.

This will involve the destruction of over a hundred mature trees and section of a local park that was donated to the people of Southend. The scheme will also involve the desecration of the site of a local Saxon King, thought to be Saebert (who ruled the local area in the early 7th Century ).

The campaign is a continuing process to stop this scheme and to raise awareness of the associated issues such as destruction of public land and heritage, increase of polluting vehicles in the area, and the ignorance of the council to the wishes of the majority of the local population.

Campaigners are currently installed in low-impact housing on the site to prevent further action being taken by the council. To find out more about the fight to save Priory Park, please visit:

Tibetan concerns

S.E.E.Dragons is concerned about the problems around the Tibetan struggle for autonomy and independance, and the right to assert their own spiritual authority.

There is a lot of focus on these matters due to the Olympic Games being held in China, and much can be read on the subject (see various media sources for information, or search your internet news for the topic).

Details on the exiled Dalai Lama can be found HERE and the equally worrying situation concerning the deposed and replaced Panchen Lama can be found HERE.

Please note that S.E.E.Dragons supports the Dalai Lama's view of non-violent discussion and resolution. If you would like to raise awareness of these issues and support the causes that aim to re-establish Tibet's spiritual autonomy, you may wish to visit the following sites:

Nuclear Power

Seasoned campaigner Irene Willis has informed us of proposals to build, or extend, 4 major nuclear power stations around the country. The sites are: Bradwell, Dungeness, Hinkley Point and Sizewell.

Nuclear Power is a large producer of carbon emissions, despite the opposing claims of the nuclear industry. In addition, the potential for disaster is huge (see items relating to the Chernobyl disaster, for example).

Also, the Government plans to spend money on the latest generation of destructive nuclear weapons. This money could be spent on better things such as hospitals, schools and social support systems.

If you would like further information about the campaigns to prevent the building of these nuclear stations, please see the sites below. If you wish to get actively involved in campaigning, please contact us at campaigns@seedragonsorg.uk and we will pass your details onto Irene, who can then inform you further.

Transition Town Westcliff

The Transition Town initiatives are a way for local communities to prepare for a more sustainable, energy-lean future. Westcliff has become the 47th Transition Town.

"The thinking behind TTW is simply that a town using much less energy and resources than we presently consume could, if properly planned for and designed, be more resilient, more abundant and more pleasurable than the present"

To find out more about this initiative, and what you can do to make your own personal transition to a lower-energy, planet-friendly lifestyle, click on the link below:

Transition Town Westcliff

Representatives from Transition Town Westcliff will be speaking at the S.E.E.Dragons Meeting on Wednesday 9th July. Come along and find out more!
